Ventura Raceway concluded its 2016 regular season Saturday night October 29, with an outstanding night of racing featuring USAC Midgets, California Lightning Sprints and VRA Pro Dwarf Cars. The crowd in attendance was witness to some of the best racing at the track all season.

USAC Midgets were the headline show Saturday as the midget drivers an crews prepare themselves for the 76th Turkey Night Grand Prix set to run on Thanksgiving night, Thursday October 24, with a preliminary event for sprint cars with midget practice on Wednesday October 23.  Twenty-five midgets were on hand to compete on Ventura’s 1/5 mile clay oval.  The midgets held single-car qualifying with point leader Ronnie Gardner setting quick time with a lap of 12.039 seconds.  Heat race wins went to Alex Schutte in heat one, Cory Elliott in heat two and Kevin Thomas Jr. in heat three.  The 30 lap main event was a fast and furious affair with Robby Josette taking the win from his outside front row starting position.  Ronnie Gardner finished second moving from 6th place starting position.  Finishing third through fifth were Cory Elliott, Cody Swanson and Michael Faccinto.  The night saw several red flags after cars flipped on the track. Frankie Guerrini flipped in heat race one.  Jake Swanson, Alex Schutte and Terry Nichols flipped in the feature.  Ronnie Gardner came out of the night still leading the USAC Western States point battle with one race remaining at Bakersfield Speedway prior to their last race at the Turkey Night Grand Prix, here at Ventura Raceway, October 24.

VRA Pro Dwarf Cars finished their 2016 season with a great, exciting main event that saw David Conley hold off his sons Johnny and Tim to take the 20 lap feature win.  The second place finish by Johnny Conley allowed him to clinch the 2016 series championship over Tommy Velasquez III by 195 points.  Following the Conley family across the finish line were Gage Cheek and Tommy Velasquez III.  The Dwarf Cars ran three heat races with wins going to Jason Horton, Tommy Velasquez III and Tim Conley.  The top five point finishers in this class, this season, went to two families.  Johnny Conley finished first, brother Tim finished third, their dad David finished 4th.  The Velasquez family took second place with Tommy Velasquez III and his brother Nick Velasquez finished fifth in points.

The winged California Lightning Sprints ended their season as well Saturday with an exciting 25 lap main event that went to Jeff Dyer over Jarrett Kramer, Charlie Carracillo, new season champ Bobby Michnowicz and Jeremy Queener.  Their three heat races went to Jeff Dyer in heat one, Eric Greco in heat two and Pat Kelly in heat three.  These fast and very popular racers will be back in 2017 to thrill their fans with great racing.
