Results for 10-15-2016

Saturday night, October 15, was a night of special events in two of the five classes run.  IMCA Modifieds ran a special $800 to win race and the Senior Dwarf Car drivers ran a memorial race in memory of George Calvo.  Also running Saturday night were the VRA Hobby Stocks, Focus Midgets and the popular California Lightning Sprints.

VRA Senior Dwarf Cars honored the memory of George Calvo who was was a popular VRA Dwarf Car driver who passed away a few weeks ago.   This non point race was set up for the Seniors to show their respect for this fine driver who left us far too soon.  Two heat races were run with wins going to Mike Lewis and Ryan O’Conner.  Their 20 lap feature went to Frankie Politelli over Ryan O’Conner, Britiney Sandoval, Josh Cochran and Bill VanPraag. The race was very competitive with Curt Cook, Ryan O’Conner and Frankie Politelli all leading laps during the race.

An IMCA Modified special event saw seventeen cars in the pits with their drivers going for the special $800 first place prize.  Luis Espinoza took the lead early and held off a hard challenge by Dave Phipps and Chris Crompe for 22 of the 30 laps, only to suffer mechanical problems and fall out of the race.  Dave Phipps then led laps 23 to 26 with Chris Crompe getting by on lap 27 to take the lead and the win over a fast closing Austin Rodarte, who finished second.  Robbie Witwer, Andrew Phipps and Chuck Becker finished third through fifth. There were three heat races run, with wins going to Andrew Phipps, Donald Houghton and Scott Olsen.

The California Lightning Sprints were back Saturday night with 20 cars in attendance. Bobby Michnowicz took the win in their 25 lap feature.  Following Michnowicz across the finish line were Dakota Albright, Aiden Lange, Craig Dillard and Bruce Douglass. The winged racers ran three heat races with wins going to Craig Dillard, Dakota Albright and Aiden Lange.  This class of winged midget-sized race cars has proven to be crowd favorites.  They will be back to help us close out our regular season on October 29.

VRA Hobby Stocks crowned their 2016 Champion on Saturday night when Trevor Fitzgibbon took the main event win and the series title.  He passed early race leader Zachary Peterson on lap 11 and went on to take the win.  He was followed across the finish line by Ernie Malone, Devin Montgomery, Sam Garvin and Zachary Peterson.  Trevor Fitzgibbon’s win clinched the 2016 title in this division.

In VRA/USAC Focus Midgets Jesse Love III took the 30 lap feature win over Jet Davison, Randi Pankratz, Ashley Hazleton and Joel Rayborne.  This was Love’s first win at Ventura and is only 11 years old!  He passed Jet Davison on lap 3 and led to the checkered flag.  Two heats were run with wins going to Joel Rayborne and Ashley Hazleton.  With one race left in their season, Daniel Anderson leads Randi Pankratz by 225 points.
