Results for 10-1-2016

Saturday night, October 1, saw another exciting, action filled night of short track racing at Ventura Raceway.  With the 2016 season quickly winding down, drivers in all competing classes are were going all out to score points and move up in the standings.  Competition once again was very close and hard fought throughout the night’s events.

In VRA 360 Sprints, a field of 13 cars signed into the pits for the night’s action. The night saw past track champion Kyle Smith return to action after his hard crash on September 3.   He took the 30 lap main event win over new 2016 series champion Rick Hendrix, past champion Greg Taylor, Craig Dillard and Kenny Perkins. Their two heat race wins went to Kenny Perkins and Rick Taylor.  Rick Hendrix’s championship is his first VRA track championship. He clinched the honor after finishing second in his heat race.

VRA Dwarf Cars were back in action Saturday with a new first time winner taking the checkered flag in their 20 lap main event.  Tommy Velasquez III took the win in a hard fought victory over David Conley and an early to mid race battle with David Taylor. Following Tommy Velasquez III and David Conley to the finish were first time dwarf car racer Trevor Fitzgibbon, Jason Horton and Tom Morley.   Heat race wins went to Nick Velasquez, Jeff Fillingame and David Taylor.  Fourteen races into the season finds Johnny Conley leading Tommy Velasquez III by 180 points.

IMCA Modified action saw eleven cars in the pits.  Luis Espinoza held off a hard challenge by Cody Laney to take the 20 lap feature win.  Following Espinoza and Laney were Dave Phipps, new 2016 series and four time IMCA champ Jack Parker and Andrew Greiman. There were two heat races run, with wins going to Cody Laney and Andrew Greiman.

VRA Senior Sprints were on hand with ten cars signed into the pits.  Steve Brown took the 20 lap feature win over Craig Dillard, Ed Schwarz, Danny Parrish and Greg Andrews.  Point leader Chris Meredith had a tough night going out in a front straight incident on lap 2 of the feature.  Two heat races were run with the wins going to Steve Brown and Wally Pankratz.  After nine races, Chris Meredith leads Steve Brown by 90 points.

California Lightning Sprints were back Saturday night with 17 cars in attendance.  Past VRA Senior Sprint driver Bruce Douglass took his first ever CLS series win in their 20 lap feature.  Following Douglass across the finish line were Jarrett Kramer, Kevin Michnowicz and Bobby Michnowicz. The winged racers ran three heat races with wins going to Kevin Michnowicz, Cody Nigh and Jon Squire.

Ventura Raceway will be dark on October 8, due to the Highland Games taking place at the Fairgrounds.  We will resume our 2016 season Saturday October 15, with a special IMCA Modified race, Hobby Stocks, Focus Midgets, California Lightning Sprints and a special Senior Dwarf Car race in memory of George Calvo.  Be sure to get your reserved tickets for the November 24, the 76th annual Turkey Night Grand Prix.  For ticket sales and race information call 805-648-RACE.
