Jason Horton wins the first Dwarf Car Silver Cup Feature and then announces to the crowd that he was giving his winnings to some friends in need. Good job Jason!
Aaron Rodarte wins his first IMCA Modified Main of the 2017 season.
Steve Brown lead from the first lap to the checkered to win the Senior Sprint Main.
Sam Garvin wins the Hobby Stock Main and is currently leading the points race.
Jessica Valentine wins her first ever Focus Main in only her fourth start.
After a month of weather delays and holidays, Ventura Raceway returned to action Saturday night April 22, with a full program of exciting racing that featured the first of four VRA Dwarf Car Silver Cup Races. The night also saw action in VRA Senior Sprints, IMCA Modifieds, VRA Hobby Stocks, Focus Midgets and demonstration runs by a side by side racer.
In VRA Dwarf Cars, Jason Horton took the win in the 20 lap Silver Cup Race over a strong field of 16 cars. Jason had a night to remember that started by having his car damaged in staging by a sprint car that came off the track and right into the left side of his car! His crew repaired the car to make it for qualifying. He ran strong throughout the evening and went on to take the main event win and claimed the $500 winner’s check and the Silver Cup. Horton, who started outside front row of the feature, led all 20 laps of the race. Tommy Velasquez III fought hard to get by but was unable to pass Horton and finished a very strong second place. Following Horton and Velasquez III across the line were Trevor Fitzgibbon, David Conley and Nick Velasquez. The night saw three heat races run with wins going to Johnny Conley in heat one, David Conley in heat two and Trevor Fitzgibbon in heat three. A semi main was also run to fill the main event lineup after the heat races were completed. Four cars transferred from the semi main to fill the 16 car starting field. The transferring drivers were Chase Lippert, Jeff Heinz, Brad Curnel and Tom Morley. After three races this season, David Conley leads Tommy Velasquez III by 90 points and Tim Conley by 95 points in the season long point race.
In IMCA Modified action, Aaron Rodarte had a perfect night by winning his heat race and then going on to take the 20 lap feature over a field of eleven cars. Aaron led all 20 laps of the main event to get the win over Dave Phipps, Chris Crompe, Luis Espinoza and Scott Olsen. Chris Crompe took the win in the other heat race. In the point race, Chris Crompe leads Luis Espinoza by 5 points and Dave Phipps by 7 points after three races.
VRA Senior Sprints also competed Saturday night. The eight cars in attendance ran two heat races with wins going to Greg Andrews in heat one and Ed Schwarz in heat two. The 20 lap main event went to Steve Brown, who led all 20 laps. He was followed across the finish line by Danny Parrish, Ed Schwarz, Greg Andrews and Wally Pankratz. After two races in 2017, Ed Schwarz leads Danny Parrish by 5 points.
There were seven VRA Hobby Stocks present for the night’s action. Their one heat race went to Mike Stanford. The 20 lap main event saw Sam Garvin lead all 20 laps of the race. He survived challenges from Heath Morton and Mike Stanford to get his first win of the new season. The race ended with Mike Stanford, David Bettencourt, Heath Morton and Gary Garvin following Sam Garvin across the finish line. Sam Garvin now leads his dad, Gary Garvin, by 65 points in the point race.
The Focus main event saw 16 year old Jessie Valentine take her first ever race win. She took the lead from early race leader Daniel Anderson on lap eleven and then led to the finish on lap twenty. Following her across the line were Randi Pankratz, Kyle Beilman, Brandon Biggs and Jet Davison. After two Focus events in this season, three drivers: Jessica Valentine, Jet Davison and Brandon Biggs are all tied for the lead with 430 points.
Saturday night also saw a demonstration run by side by side racer Brian Gluck. He brought out his off road
side by side to demonstrate the new class we are trying to get started. He ran several times and demonstrated that these vehicles can race here. We will be scheduling more possible events for these vehicles later in the season. Watch our website and Facebook page for upcoming dates.
Next Saturday night April 29, we will have the second Flat Track/Speedway event of 2017. We will be back to car racing on Saturday night May 6, with the USAC/CRA 410 Sprints, VRA Senior Sprints and Focus Midgets.
