Results 9-2-2017

Saturday night September 2, saw the running of the third race in the 2017 ARP Battle at the Beach Series within a series at Ventura Raceway. VRA 360 Sprint Cars and visiting USAC Western 360 Series Sprint Cars battled for the win in the third of four ARP Battle at the Beach Races of 2017. Also racing that night were the VRA Dwarf Cars, California Lightning Sprints, IMCA Modifieds and Hobby Stocks.

The USAC/VRA ARP Battle at the Beach drew a small but quality field of twelve 360 sprint cars. The champion will be crowned King of the Beach as part of the November running of the Turkey Night Grand Prix on November 23rd. The winner of each of these four races wins a very special Battle at the Beach trophy and $1,500! The night started off with Cody Majors topping qualifying with a run of 12.474 seconds. Troy Rutherford took the win in the first heat race and Charlie Butcher took heat race two. Twelve cars took the green for their main event. The 30 lap main event was an exciting race as Matt Mitchell led laps 1-18. Tristan Guardino then made great move on a restart to pass Mitchell and take the lead on lap 19 and then go on to take the win over Mitchell, Kyle Smith, Guy Woodward and Tom Hendricks. Tristan Guardino’s win is his first in the 2017 Battle at the Beach Series and moved him into the lead in the battle to become the 2017 King of the Beach. VRA Sprint Car point leader Kyle Smith is in second in the Battle at the Beach Series and leads Charlie Butcher by 315 points in the VRA Series Championship battle.

The California Lightning Sprints made their fourth 2017 appearance and the racing was very good. They ran three heat races with wins going to Bruce Douglas in heat one, Cody Nigh in heat two and Dominic
Del Monte in heat three. The 25 lap main event saw Bobby Michnowicz take another Ventura win in convincing fashion over Aiden Lange, Cody Nigh, Doug Nunes and Jarrett Kramer.

VRA Dwarf Cars were back in action Saturday night with 18 cars signed into the pits. Three heat races were run with wins going to Trevor Fitzgibbon in heat one, Trent Morley in heat two, and Jason Horton in heat three. Their 20 lap main was a good race that saw Tim Conley take the win from the pole position over Jason Horton, Tommy Velasquez III, Kody Cowan, and Nick Velasquez. After eleven races, Johnny Conley leads brother Tim Conley by 90 points and Tommy Velasquez III by 15 points.

A small field of IMCA Modifieds were on hand Saturday night. Luis Espinoza clinched the Ventura Raceway IMCA season championship with his third place finish in their fifteen lap main event, which was won by Terry Hershberger. Hershberger took the lead when three cars crashed in turn three with five laps to go. On the restart, he took a solid lead and held on to the finish to take his first Ventura Raceway victory over Jack Parker, Luis Espinoza and Loren DeArmond.

The final class racing Saturday night was the VRA Hobby Stocks. Eight cars were on hand to run two heat races, which were won by Mike Stanford in heat one and Gary Curtis in heat two. Their twenty lap main event went to past class champion Ernie Malone, who led all twenty laps to take the win over Gary Curtis, Mike Stanford, Sam Garvin and Joey Diaz. After seven races in 2017, Sam Garvin leads his dad Gary Garvin by 110 points and Mike Stanford by 125 points.

Next Saturday night, September 9th, will see a full program featuring VRA Dwarf Cars, in their third race in the Silver Cup Series within a series. Also racing that night will be VRA Senior Sprints, Hobby Stocks, Focus Midgets and a special added race for TQ Midgets.
