Results for 5-20-2017

Ventura Raceway continued its 2017 car racing season Saturday night May 20, with four classes of racing action.  Competition was very close and hard fought from top to bottom in each class from the opening heat races to the final main events.

In VRA 360 Sprints, 10 cars signed into the pits for the first event for them since opening night March 11.  The win in their 30 lap feature went to first time Sprint car winner Kyle Edwards over past champion Kyle Smith, Kenny Perkins, 2016 Champion Rick Hendrix and rookie Brent Owens. The VRA Sprints ran two heat races with wins going to Ed Schwarz in heat one and Kyle Smith in heat two.  After two nights of competition in 2017, past champion Kyle Smith leads Kenny Perkins by 5 points and Kyle Edwards by 35 points.

VRA Senior Sprint action saw Steve Brown take his second 20 lap feature win in 2017   over Wally Pankratz, Ed Schwarz, Chris Meredith and Greg Andrews. They ran two heat races with wins going to Wally Pankratz and Ed Schwarz. There were 8 cars signed in for the night.  After four races in 2017, Ed Schwarz leads Steve Brown by 15 points and Wally Pankratz by 20 points.

There were 20 dwarf cars signed in for the VRA Dwarf Cars races Saturday night. First time winner, L J Billings took the win over Jason Horton, Nick Velasquez, Tim Conley and David Conley in their 20 lap main event.  The race was fast and furious and saw 12 of the sixteen starters finish on the lead lap. Their three heat races went to Tom Morley in heat one, Tom Stevens Jr. took heat two and Nick Velasquez took heat three.  Jeff Brink took the win in the semi main event over Brad Curnel, Tommy Velasquez and Kody Cowen.  After 5 races this season, David Conley leads the point race by 90 points over his son, Johnny Conley and 125 points over Jason Horton.

IMCA Modified action saw a strong field of 13 cars take the green flag for their 20 lap feature. David Phipps took his first IMCA win since 2013 in their 20 lap feature.  Following him across the line were Luis Espinoza, Chris Crompe, Jack Parker and Blake Thornell.  Austin Rodarte took heat race one and David Phipps took heat race two.  After five races in 2017, Chris Crompe leads Luis Espinoza by 3 points and David Phipps by 8 points.

Ventura Raceway will be dark next week May 27, as we celebrate the Memorial Day Holiday weekend.  We will return to action Saturday, June 3, with the USAC 360 Sprints and VRA Sprints in the first 2017 Battle at the Beach Sprint Car Race.  Also, racing that night will be IMCA Modifieds, California Lightning Sprints and 600’s.
