Results for 03/19/2016

Ventura Raceway opened its car racing season to a good crowd of fans and a strong field of cars.  After four months off, and last weeks rainout, the racers were ready to go and the night proved to be exciting and eventful. Competition was very close and hard fought from top to bottom in each class from the opening heat races to the final main events.

In VRA Sprints, 14 cars signed into the pits for their 2016 season opener.  2014 series champion Kyle Smith took the wild 30 lap man event over Rick Hendrix, 2015 series champion Guy Woodward, Jeremy Ellertson and Hobie Conway. The Sprints ran two heat races with wins going to Hobie Conway in heat one and Kyle Smith in heat two.  Kyle Smith now is leading in the point race by 25 points over Rick Hendrix and 30 pints over Guy Woodward.  The VRA Sprint Car Series for 2016 promises to be a great series as several new drivers were on hand, Saturday, making their series debuts.

VRA Dwarf Cars returned to action Saturday with Tim Conley taking the win over his dad David Conley, who has moved from the senior class to run the pros.  2015 series champ Johnny Conley was not present due to the birth of his first child, a daughter, last week.  Following the Conley’s across the finish line were Jason Horton, past series champ Ray Estrada, and Tommy Velasquez III. Their three heat races went to Ray Estrada, Mike Neal and Tim Conley.  There were 21 dwarf cars signed in for there season opener.

IMCA Modified action saw a very good race by a strong field of 14 modifieds.  Past champion Robbie Witwer took the 20 lap season opener over Cody Laney, past champion, Austin Rodarte, past champion, Aaron Rodarte and Dennis Eckert.  Cody Laney took heat race one and Justin Miller took heat race two. The main event was an exciting race from the start to finish with Austin Rodarte coming from the rear of the field to his third place finish giving him the hard charger title for the race.

VRA’s Hobby Stock Class opened their 2016 season with 12 cars in attendance.  Mike Stanford started the new season off with the win in the 20 lap main event that saw several crashes and incidents.  Following Stanford across the line were Sam Garvin, Zachary Peterson, Christina Garvin and 2015 champion David Heurung. Their two heat races went to Trevor Fitzgibbon and David Heurung.

Seven VRA Focus midgets were on hand for Saturday night’s opening event.  The main event was all Daniel Anderson who had the field covered by a half lap at the end of the race. Following him to the checkered flag were past champion Ashley Hazleton, Tyler Williams, Matt McCarthy and Mike Leach.  There heat race win also went to Anderson.

Ventura Raceway will be dark next Saturday March 26, for the Easter Weekend.  We will resume racing on Saturday April 2, with a full program of VRA Sprints, Hobby Stocks, Dwarf Cars and California Lightning Sprints.
