It was a
good night for VRA Sprint Car competitor
Kyle Smith as he took his first ever VRA
Sprint Car win. Kyle has been knocking
on the door for some time now but
Saturday May 19, was the night the win
finally came. Starting from the pole
position, he led all 30 laps of the main
event to take the win over Clark
Templeman III, Tom Hendricks, Justin
Kierce and Bruce Douglass. The first
half of the race saw Smith challenged by
2011 VRA Champ Greg Taylor but Taylor
fell out after contact with the wall.
There were two heat races held with the
Extreme Muffler Heat One going to Greg
Taylor and the LRB Manufacturing Heat
Two going to Justin Kierce. The cars of
Zach Sawyers and Guy Woodward failed to
start the main due to mechanical issues
earlier in the night. The win Saturday
night puts Kyle Smith into the VRA point
lead over John Nock by 145 points after
five races.
IMCA Modifieds returned to action with a
full night or racing that saw 14 cars
take the green flag for their 20 lap
main event. There were two heat races
run with the wins going to Tom Topping
in the Extreme Muffler Heat One and
Austin Rodarte in the Speedway
Engineering Heat Two. The twenty lap
feature went to Josh Vogt who made a
good pass of early race leader Austin
Rodarte on lap 17. Following Vogt across
the line were Austin Rodarte, Joey
Yantis, Donald Houghton and Randy
Thornell.
In VRA Sport Compact action Jess
Carlucci took his first win of 2012 in
their 20 lap main event. Following him
across the line were James Adler,
Michaela Stanton, Zach Peterson and Brad
Long. Two heats were run with Michaela
Stanton taking Heat One and Jess
Carlucci taking Heat Two. Carlucci's win
puts him 35 points ahead of Adlar in the
season long point race after four races.
Mike Sweeney made it two in a row in the
VRA Mod Lite class with a 20 lap win
over Dave Dotson, Luke Boles and Mike
Kornder.
VRA Go Karts ran the big track for the
first time in over 20 years and put on a
great night of exciting racing. Heat One
went to Ashley Hazelton and Heat Two
went to Justin Raper. The 20 lap feature
saw Chris Carmody take the win over
Justin Raper, Cody Nigh, Tyler Stover
and Henry Ito.
The final group racing Saturday was our
new Oval Flat Track Quad Class. A small
field of two quads was on hand but they
put on a good race with the win going to
David Knight over Matt Williams.
Ventura Raceway returns to action next
weekend with a full program of oval
track racing featuring VRA Midgets,
Dwarf Cars, Focus Midgets, Mod Lites,
Junior Midgets and Min Dwarf Cars.
