Ventura CA - July 16, 2011.....It
was another great night for Troy
Rutherford as he took his number 11
sprint car from its fourth place
starting position to the front on
lap 6 and went on to win the 30 lap
feature event at Ventura Raceway
Saturday night July 16. Early lap
leader Jimmy Crawford bobbled on lap
5 and Rutherford went to the lead
and never looked back. Early race
challenger and series point leader
Greg Taylor left the track with
mechanical issues on lap 13. There
were several other on track
incidents, including a red flag
stoppage on lap 25 for a accident on
the back stretch coming out of turn
two which eliminated other front
runners Derek Buckley, Brent
Camarillo and Michael Smith. Steve
Conrad was also in the incident but
was able to continue and eventually
finished fourth. Rutherford ran a
strong race to the checkered flag
after the red and was followed by
Brian Camarillo, Josh Ford, Conrad
and Tom Hendricks. Greg Taylor
continues to lead the series point
race by 260 points over Josh Ford.
One semi main event was run with the
win going to Tom Harper. Heat race
wins went to Brian Camarillo in the
Extreme Mufflers Heat One, Steve
Conrad in the Joie of Seating Heat
Two and Derek Buckley in the BR
Motorsports Heat Three. There were a
total of 26 VRA 360 Sprint cars
signed into the pits on Saturday
night.
VRA Midgets were on hand with 23
cars signed into the pits. The win
in the 30 lap midget feature went to
point leader Cory Kruseman who took
the lead on lap 8 from Austin Smith
and went on to take the victory over
"Flyin" Brian Camarillo who was on
the move on the top of the track
passing several cars in the last few
laps of the race, There were three
heat races run with wins going to
Brian Camarillo in the West Evans
Motorsports Heat One, Greg Bragg in
the Joie of Seating Heat Two and
Cory Kruseman in the BR Motorsports
Heat Three. Kruseman now hold a 60
point lead over Robbie Josett
heading into the Battle at the Beach
Race 3 set for the Ventura County
Fair on August 3.
Ford Focus and Junior Focus Racers
were also in attendance. The fields
were small but the racing was good.
Six Focus racers ran one heat that
went to Casey Martinez who also went
on the win the 20 lap main. There
were also six Junior Focus racers
and their heat race went to Parker
Colston. The feature went to Bradley
Morris. These racers will also be
making an appearance at the FAIR
event on August 3.
IMCA Modifieds were back in action
with a field of 16 cars signed into
the pits. In one of their best races
of the season, Austin Rodarte took
the win over Brad Prows, Damon
Redman, Gary Curtis, Jack Parker and
Jim Evans. There were two heat races
held with the wins going to Randy
Thornell and Austin Rodarte. Point
leader Aaron Rodarte finished 7 and
now holds a one point lead over Brad
Prows going into the Ventura County
Fair event set for August 4.
VRA Sport Compacts also raced
Saturday night. A field of eight
cars took the green for the 20 lap
main event. The race was dominated
by Gary Marshall Jr. but his car
failed post race inspection giving
the win to Ryan Changus, followed by
Zach Peterson, Jess Carlucci, John
Butcher and Heath Morton. Their one
heat race went to Jess Carlucci.
these racers will also be competing
at the Fair on August 4.
The final group competing on
Saturday night was our VRA Go Karts.
The 20 lap main event went to David
Pankratz followed by Josh Ford, Reid
Harper, Johnny Conley and Kenny
Byers Jr. Two heat races were run
with wins going to Kenny Byers Jr.
and Johnny Conley. The go karts will
be racing at the Fair on August 4.
Ventura Raceway will resume racing
next Saturday July 23, with a full
program of VRA Sprint Cars, Senior
Sprint Cars, Dwarf Cars, Mod Lites
and our kids classes Mini Dwarf Cars
and Junior Midgets.
