Ford Wins All Coast $2000 |
|
Saturday
night March 20, saw a great field of VRA
Sprint Cars assembled for the first race
in the 2010 All Coast Challenge Series.
Some of the best sprint car drivers in
the West were on hand to go for the
$2,000 to win first place check.
Visiting drivers included David Cardy,
Nic Faas, Henry Clarke and Johnathan
Henry. These drivers were there to
challenge the regular VRA drivers for
the cash and glory.
Racing got under way with five heat
races for the 43 cars signed into the
pits. Heat race wins went to Rob
Kershaw, Troy Rutherford, Rick Hendrix,
Josh Ford and Ronnie Case. The large car
count necessitated a two semi main
format. The semi mains ran 12 laps with
four cars transferring to the feature.
The first semi went to Greg Taylor with
Cody Kershaw, Guy Woodward and Bruce
Douglass joining him in moving on the
feature. Jeff Culver won the second semi
main with Nic Faas, Luis Espinoza and
David Cardy also moving on to the
feature. The 30-lap feature was highly
anticipated as the 23 starters fired off
for the start. The race got under way
with Henry Clarke out front early but
Josh Ford, Jimmy Crawford and Kevin
Kierce were on the move to the front.
Clarke and Ford were able to get out
front and battled for several laps,
until a yellow came out for a flip in
turn three by Brian Camarillo. When the
race resumed the battle continued with
Ford getting by Clarke who eventually
would make contact with another car and
stop in turn two, bringing out the
yellow. On lap 19 Ronnie Case hit the
wall in turn one-two and slowed to a
stop in turn three. From that point on,
it was a battle to the flag with Josh
Ford holding off Troy Rutherford and
then Jimmy Crawford and Kevin Kierce. At
the flag it was Josh Ford taking the
win, followed by Kevin Kierce, Jimmy
Crawford, Don Ganson and Troy
Rutherford. It was a great start to the
three race series in a series that will
conclude with a $5,000 to win event in
October.
IMCA Modifieds made their 2010 debut
with a field of seventeen cars in the
pits. Heat race wins went to Damon
Redman and Matt Lauer. Lauer went on to
dominate the feature and take the win.
Dennis Eckert, Ron Wiley, Rob Green and
Jack Parker followed him across the
line. 2009 series track champion Austin
Rodarte finished sixth.
Also racing on Saturday night were the
VRA Pro Dwarf Cars. In heat race action,
wins went to Angel Figueroa, Eric Alton
and Curt Cook. Figueroa then went on to
win the 15-lap feature. Finishing second
through fifth in the feature were Steven
Benson, Dillon Hume, Bill VanPraag and
Thomas Velasquez.
The final group racing Saturday was our
VRA Sport Compacts. Now racing in rear
wheel only competition, 14 cars were
ready for the night’s action. Two heat
races were run with wins going to Trevor
Fitzbiggon and Jason Marshall.
Fitzgibbon then went on to take the 15
lap feature. Also finishing in the top
five were James Brown, Brent Underwood,
Mike Frazier and Bill Changus.
Next Saturday night, March 27, will see
VRA Sprints, Senior Sprints, IMCA
Modifieds, Senior Dwarf Cars, Junior
Midgets and Mini Dwarf Cars in action. |
